The term “Cloud” has been interpreted by many people to mean different things. Cloud computing definition: The easiest way to explain it is that IT resources are readily available on demand. This can mean that implementations times are quick and easy, no capital investment and no long term contracts. SLA’s (service level agreements), hosting services can also be included based on performance, availability, security and reliability in the cloud.
There are many services gathered together within the cloud. You will have software, hardware and managed operational resources available. The applications are usually offered by 3rd party venders to SMB and Fortune 500 companies alike.
Here are some examples of some of the services that you may be able to utilize in your company:
- Software as a Service (SaaS) – this type of application is a multi-tenant solution which allows many users access to large network of services with low costs.
- Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) – will normally include server, storage devices and networks (local). You are billed based on usage.
- Platform as a Service (PaaS) - This type of unmanaged application is generally used by developers, programmers and software venders. It allows them to access development tools, APIs (application programming interfaces) and storage in the cloud. Again, this is another way to keeps cost low (pay for what you use).
Always keep in mind that “cloud” services give you the option to experiment with new web technologies with no upfront commitment and little(subscription based billing) or no costs. You can then see if the application works for your company, which in turn allows you to create a budget for future. Contracts can be terminated at anytime which means that your company would avoid the ROI risks and uncertainty.
Cloud computing and cloud technology is here to stay. Remember, it can give you scalability, agility, API, easier maintenance, reduces costs and contract terms, new services and resources on demand! It could be for you!
